October 25, 2016 marked another significant activity in promoting the culture of research in Colegio San Agustin – Bacolod as the CSA-B Research and Planning Office, in collaboration with the Human Resource and Development Office, conducted its Annual Research Forum. The aforementioned is a venue wherein the educative community is informed of the current status of the school in terms of Research and Development (R&D) and the dissemination of research findings to the educative community. The research forum, held in the school’s audio-visual room, had 49 attendees which includes the administrators and faculty members coming from the different colleges and department.
The School President, Rev. Fr. Andrew P. Batayola, OSA, graced the activity by sharing a message to the educative community. His message put an emphasis on the importance of research for the progress of the school and the society. At the same time, he highlighted the support that the school provides for faculty members who have interest to engage in R&D projects. This is then followed by the presentation of the current status of the school’s R&D. The Director for Research and Planning, Paolo G. Hilado RN, DRDM, MN, relayed information pertaining to the aforementioned such as the school’s performance targets in terms of research, new services offered by the support systems for research, upcoming Research Capability seminars & trainings, on-going and accomplished R&D projects by the faculty together with the positive impact it brings to the educative community, awards and recognitions in research garnered by the students and also the current challenges in research that the school needs to address.
The presentation of the findings of accomplished research projects followed right after, Mr. Mhelcar Anierdes, SHS In-charge of the Basic Education Department, presented his research entitled “The Teaching Efficacy of Teachers of the Basic Education Department of CSA-B”. The salient points of the said research serve as a basis of the school in identifying areas for improvement and the necessary interventions to have it addressed effectively. Another researcher from the faculty force of the College of Arts, Sciences and Education, Ms. Carla Marez Peruelo, also presented her study entitled “Grit, Time Perspective and Academic Achievement among College Freshmen”. Her research showcased the importance of unyielding courage to face challenges and an individual’s inclination to be future oriented; both of which contributory toward academic excellence.
Two of the research presentations were those awarded with the Institutional Research Grant namely: “The Extent of Implementation of CSA-B Community Extension Program Utilizing Community Organizing Participatory Action Research (COPAR)” by Mrs. Reyma Magbanua, Clinical Instructor from the College of Nursing and “RGA: an Annual Faculty Performance Evaluation System for Colegio San Agustin – Bacolod” by Mr. Rodrigo Gangoso, Mr. Arnel Maghinay and Mr. Giovani Ten, faculty members from the CS/IT Program of the College of Accountancy, Business Education and Computer Studies (CABECS). Recommendations from the research on COPAR provided insights on how the school can further improve the services it provides to its adopted communities and other extension activities. On the other hand, the research of the CABECS faculty members eventually led to the development of software that automates the process of evaluating the performance of the faculty. This developed technology has been subjected to the evaluation of its intended users; sound suggestions were integrated so as to further improve the capabilities of the software. Their research presents the appreciation and preference of the administrators and faculty members for the developed technology.
The school is also proud to have a research presentation from Mr. Julio V Zayco, a BS Psychology Graduate Batch 2016, with the research entitled “Humor Styles and Emotional Intelligence”. This was a study conducted together with his groupmates Jianne Guilot, Geresty Luyahan, and Glea Heselle Pabalinas with Dr. Ana Roberta Guanco as research adviser. Their won FIRST PLACE in the 1st CSA-B Multidisciplinary Research Presentation organized by the CSA-B Research and Planning Office held on March 22, 2016 and SECOND PLACE (Poster Presentation, Social Science Category) in the Augustinian Student Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Engagement (ASSURE) organized by the University of San Agustin in Iloilo on April 5, 2016.
The CSA-B educative community is greatly encouraged to engage in research and development projects for the generation of new knowledge and creation of tangible and intangible technologies with positive impact to the society. Let “Virtus et Scientia” serve as a guide to all Augustinians in the academe to become innovation-driven and contribute to the betterment of our society in service to God as stewards for His Creation.
