Alan Francis Ang, BSE4 and Eleazar Sabbaluca, BSIT4 of the College of Accountancy, Business Education and Computer Studies were among the 10 international finalists and the only Philippine representatives in the 1st Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Youth Entrepreneurial Meeting: Passion-Preneurs’ Challenge in Jakarta, Indonesia on October 25-29, 2016. ASEM, a biannual forum among heads of state of the European Union and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia and Anakmuda.net organized the competition.
Ang and Sabbaluca’s entry made it to the finals out of 2,500 submissions gathered from 51 countries. Their business plan, Pasalubox, is a start-up online gift-box subscription service (or sub-box service) that features food, collectibles and souvenirs from a select city on a monthly basis. The box includes brochures of the chosen city or province to promote its local and organic micro, small, medium enterprises (MSMEs), the locality and its products.
The competition chose the best proposals from across Europe and Asia to mobilize the potential of the youth in economic and socio-cultural dialogue between the partner countries. The five-day competition consisted of intensive pitch workshops, mentoring and group discussion sessions and management forums given by top business gurus. The Philippine delegation was graced by the representative of the Philippine Embassy in Indonesia, 3rd Vice Consul Analyn de Leon-Ratonel during the Awarding and Closing Ceremony held in the Ruang Nusantara (Nusantara Room) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Indonesia.
Since the conclusion of the event, several media outlets have featured the success of Pasalubox such as The Manila Bulletin, South East Asia Post, Philippine Information Agency, and local newspapers. Currently, Ang is working on a new project to be presented at the 2017 Young Social Entrepreneur competition organized by the Singapore International Foundation in March and at the 2017 IdeaSpace Foundation Start-Up Competition organized by Manuel V. Pangilinan’s IdeaSpace Foundation in April in Manila.
