Pursuant to the aim of the institution to promote the culture of research among its students as early as Basic Education, Colegio San Agustin – Bacolod Senior High School in coordination with the Research and Planning Office held its First SHS Research Fair last March 9, 2018 at the CSA-B Auditorium with the theme “Strengthening Senior High School Program through multi-disciplinary research and application”.
Research/capstone projects of Grade 12 students from the various Strands of the Academic Track: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) and Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM), were showcased in Oral and Poster Presentations.
To enhance readiness and confidence in research presentations, the students had their experience of undergoing scrutiny from experts in the field of research from government and private sectors who were invited as panel of evaluators.
Dr. Marlin Sanogal, Executive Director of the Provincial Planning and Development Office of the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental, Lerma D. Paris, RMT, MPH, Research Manager of Department of Science and Technology – Region VI and Emily D. Singbenco, LPT, M.Chem., Science and Research Coordinator of Assumption School – Iloilo judged the Oral Presentations.
Dr. Dioscoro Marañon, Jr. PME, Research Project Manager of Carlos Hilado Memorial State College, Marites Villagante RN, MN, Research Manager of Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital and Dr. Irene Malaga, former Research and Planning Director of Colegio San Agustin – Bacolod judged the Poster Presentations.
ABM student Ma. Nica S. Teves won FIRST PLACE with the study entitled “The Relationship between Student Consumerism and Academic Performance of Graduating College Students”. Alyssa Marie Ungson from HUMSS with the study “Boarders Beyond the Borders of Home: The Experiences of Female Students Living in a Dormitory” and Jassel B. Nacionales from STEM with the study “Anti-Oxidant Activity of Carabao Grass (Paspalum conjugatum) Ethanolic Leaf Extract using DPPH Radical Scavenging Assay” grabbed SECOND and THIRD PLACES for the Oral Presentation respectively.
The STEM students captured the top three places in the Poster Presentations. FIRST PLACE was awarded to Aleah Jan V. Maghari and Marielle B. Omega who presented their study entitled “Anti-Angiogenic Effect of Mayana (Coleus blumei) Extract on Duck Egg Chorioallantoic Membrane”. SECOND PLACE was given to Mary Jane Hortelano and Angelo De los Santos for their study on “Reproductive Assessment of Blue Swimming Crab (Postunus pelagicus) from Two Crabbing Sites in Negros Occidental” and THIRD PLACE was garnered by Jeanette Secuelan for the study entitled “The Relationship between Self-esteem, Self-Efficacy and Participation in Co-Curricular Activities among SHS Students”.
The competition was part of the culminating activity for the subject – Inquiries, Investigations and Immersion (3I’s) and was organized by the SHS Office headed by SHS Coordinator, Mhelcar Anierdes, LPT, MAEd in coordination with the Research and Planning Office headed by Paolo Hilado RN, DRDM, MN, Research and Planning Director.
