Thirty (30) participants comprised of the administrators and professors teaching research subjects in Colegio San Agustin - Bacolod as well as guests from the University of San Agustin – Iloilo underwent Basic Research Ethics Training.Resource Speakers for the aforementioned were from the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB), an agency mandated by the country to ensure that research projects adhere to the universal principles for the protection of human participants via Section 12 of Republic Act No. 10532 also known as the “Philippine National Health Research System Act of 2013”. The resource speakers included Dr. Ricardo M. Manalastas, Jr., Chair of PHREB Committee on Information Dissemination, Training and Advocacy (PHREB-CIDTA), and Dr. Doris R. Benavides, Lecturer in Ethics Training through PHREB-CIDTA. The seminar aimed to guide the participants regarding the moral dimensions of research and prepare them on how to avoid, recognize and correct ethical issues when reviewing research protocols primarily to safeguard the human rights of the participants of research. Furthermore, National and International controls and guidelines for ethics in research, focusing on the institutional Research Ethics Committees (RECs) and the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB) were also presented.This two-day activity is in preparation for the formation and accreditation of the Research Ethics Committee of CSA-B which will be responsible in reviewing the ethical soundness of the research projects to be conducted by the students and faculty of the institution.
