THE PERCEIVED LEVELS OF ENGLISH PROFICIENCY OF THE FIRST YEAR COLLEGE STUDENTS OF COLEGIO SAN AGUSTIN-BACOLOD FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 2007-2008

ABSTRACT
Using descriptive correlation, this study determines the perception of the first year CSA-B college students (A.Y 2007-2008) of their level of English proficiency. Two hundred ninety one respondents from four departments evaluate themselves through questionnaires which categorize their adeptness (pre-functional, beginning, intermediate, advanced and proficient) on the four language modes (listening, speaking, writing and reading). Results indicate that generally they rank their English proficiency at the beginning level. They also rank themselves at the beginning level in listening and reading while proficient in writing. In speaking, Nursing, CABECS and CASE respondents rate themselves pre-functional, while Engineering respondents rate themselves as proficient. It is hoped that through this study, an effective teaching methodology will be developed to make students proficient in English.
